Leo and Moneca were a devoted couple who faced many challenges but remained together until the end. In 2014, they and their children were rescued from a circus in Peru by Animal Defenders International (ADI). Research shows that life in a circus is not enjoyable for lions or other animals, who are often coerced into performing through the use of physical threats such as whips, sticks, and tasers. Therefore, being rescued was a dream come true for Leo and his family.

However, their journey to freedom was not without difficulties. During ADI's initial rescue attempt, the circus fought back and prevented the rescue from being completed before going into hiding. This resulted in Leo and Moneca being separated for several months without any contact. Fortunately, Moneca and their daughters were found six months later, 600 miles away from Leo and his sons.

After their reunion, Leo and Moneca spent every moment together as a family, sharing their 4-acre habitat and sleeping together. Leo was very attentive to Moneca, and when she became sick in August, he became even more protective and supportive of her. He constantly cuddled with her to provide comfort and encourage her to eat. The close bond and affection between Leo and Moneca was evident, as they had cuddled frequently during their courtship years.

Unfortunately, Moneca passed away in September at the age of 19.

Leo's caregivers provided him with extra attention to help him cope with the loss of his beloved wife.
Although their story has a sad ending, it is touching to see the depth of love and devotion that Leo had for Moneca.
